Well I may have made an error in the car booking by arranging to hold on to it right up to the end of my trip. Once in San Francisco parking may be difficult, but then the flexibility of the car is good to have. Hmmm... As a result I have found a place to stay in Pacific Heights (near Fisherman's Wharf) that has free parking, so if I spend the day on public transport (cable cars!) or on foot I can leave the car without paying pricey hotel parking fees.
On the whole I am now quite happy with the arrangement as I have full flexibility and have transport to the airport on the final morning when I have an early start.
